90 Days of Thanksgiving

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing.  It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.” – Voltaire

Today, I am introducing a bold new concept that will change the way you view the people and circumstances around you. I believe that gratitude leads to greatness. And I aim to prove it.

I challenge you to touch the lives of 90 different people before Thanksgiving of this year.

We all know that we celebrate Thanksgiving with our family and friends to commemorate the 1621 harvest festival held by the Pilgrims and their Native American allies.

“Thanksgiving” has another meaning; the word is defined as “the expression of gratitude.”

I am challenging you, to express your gratitude to 90 people in 90 days. Offer thanksgiving to one person each day for 90 days and watch your world change.

If you are thinking “I don’t know 90 people.”

Yes, you do.

You have a family. Start there.

Then move on to your friends, co-workers, clients, past clients, vendors… if someone posts something you find funny or inspiring on their Facebook wall, send them a private message and thank them for making you laugh, or think.

If you receive great service at a restaurant, pull out a notecard, jot down a quick thank you note and leave it with your tip.

If a clerk at the grocery stores helps you find the gourmet mustard aisle, make a note of their name, and send a thank you card “in care of” the store address.

“Appreciation can make a day – even change a life.  Your willingness to put it into words is all this is necessary.” –  Margaret Cousins

For those of you who do not see the merit in my challenge, who feel it unreasonable, futile or even silly. I offer this:

Tom Hopkins, arguably the greatest sales trainer in the world, built his multimillion dollar real estate business with Thank you cards.

Joe Girard, who holds the world record for automobile sales, credits his huge success to repeat buyers and referrals he gained through thank you cards.

Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, the largest company of its’ kind in the world, sat down and wrote 5 thank you notes each night before retiring to bed.

Oprah Winfrey keeps and gratitude journal, where she logs what she is grateful for each day.

If those 4 examples of gratitude in action aren’t enough to convince you that gratitude will lead you to greatness, then disprove me! Do this challenge just to prove I’m wrong!  I’m going to hold you accountable for this challenge. On Monday, November 26th, I am going to ask you to share your experience.

As of today, August 20th, there are 93 days until Thanksgiving. Start today! Don’t wait until Thursday. Start NOW!

Remember, your challenge is to offer thanksgiving to 90 different people over the next 90 days. I encourage you to keep a log or journal to track your results. Use any means appropriate to achieve your task, email, Facebook, or better yet, a real thank you card sent in the mail. Just do it, and be ready to report back on November 26th with your results.

“The single greatest thing you can do to change your life today would be to start being grateful for what you have right now.” – Oprah Winfrey
