Breast Cancer Support Group | Practicing Gratitude | Butterfly Survivor Ornament | Battling Bertha 16 | #BlogBoost

Breast Cancer Support Group

Lisa, one of my custom furniture clients introduced me to an online breast cancer support group.   Lisa is a breast cancer survivor and had found much comfort from this particular group.

I was hesitant to join because I find that many support groups are populated with negative whiners and I have worked very hard to surround myself with positive people.  I know I must sound harsh in my criticism, and I have been known to whine myself.  But, it is counter productive.

I want to be around winners, not whiners.

I finally bit the bullet and joined the support group.

Boy was I pleasantly surprised!  This group of over 3200 thriving survivors is welcoming, warm and wonderful. If you are looking for an online support group, contact me privately and I’ll give you more information.

Practicing Gratitude

As a thank you to Lisa for sharing the support group information, I sent her a butterfly survivor ornament. This was her post about the gift in the support group:

Butterfly Survivor Ornament

Butterfly Survivor Ornament

“So the mailman drops a package off today and I open it and inside is a beautiful butterfly ornament that says “I’m a Survivor – Bless this Day.” Who is this from? Found a card. Kandas Nesbitt-Rodarte sent me this sweet gift and card to thank me for recommending this wonderful support group. Kandas, please know that you are in my heart forever and thank you so very much for this beautiful gift. You are a strong and amazing woman and may God bless you and heal you.” – Lisa

I didn’t send the butterfly survivor ornament to receive accolades, I sent it because I truly appreciated the gift of support that Lisa had given me.

Yesterday, I read a blog post by a professional musician about the importance of daily practice. It dawned on me that I, too, have a daily practice. Every day I do what I can to reach out in kindness to others, be it a smile, kind word, joke to invoke laughter, in hopes that they will pay this kindness forward.

As the Gratitude Geek, I also practice (and teach) appreciation through the age old tradition of sending a thank you card.

Two decades ago, I watched a documentary about Mary Kay Ash, founder of the makeup empire. I learned two very important business lessons from that show:

  • When someone asks you how you are doing, regardless of how you really feel, answer with “I am fabulous.” I have been following this advice for 20 years!! To this day, I still surprise people with my answer.
  • On purpose, throughout the day, be on the lookout for people who deserve a special thank you and send them a greeting card telling them why!

While I implemented lesson one immediately and continue to practice it, lesson two took a lot longer for me to learn.

You might not believe this but for almost a decade I was a very lonely work-at-home mom. The story of how I overcame the loneliness is an entirely different blog post. However, a huge factor was SendOutCards.

Butterfly Survivor Ornament

The butterfly survivor ornament I sent to Lisa was from SendOutcards. SendOutCards now features a selection of Pink Ribbon themed items in the Gift Shop and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to support breast cancer research and funding.

Do you know a breast cancer survivor? Would you like to send her (or him) a gift this month to celebrate her thriving life? Or perhaps, you’d just like to tell her how much she inspires you? Contact me privately for information on how you can do so for just the cost of postage.

Butterflies have always been a symbol of freedom, beauty and peace. This ornately designed Butterfly Survivor Ornament enhanced with diamond like stones, lends 2 powerful sentiments “I’m a Survivor” and “Bless this Day”. Perfect for displaying at home, at work or even from your rear view mirror. Never go another day without this simple reminder of freedom, beauty and peace.

7 Apps and Websites For Your Small Business

This week AmericanExpress OPEN and MSNBC shared the favorite apps and websites used by seven small business owners to increase productivity, or just make business easier.

7 Apps and Websites for Your Small Business

Proprompter is an app for your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch that works like a teleprompter.  If you are making videos for your business and having trouble memorizing your script, Proprompter may be a good solution for you.

Flipagram is an app compatible with iPhone and Android that you can use to create short videos set to music with images that are stored on your phone.  You can share the videos via text, email, and social media.

Eventbrite is a website I use frequently.   You can create a landing page for your event and collect RSVPs and even payments by attendees.  It’s a great solution for any size event.

SendOutCards is near and dear to my heart.  Face it, people just don’t open e-mail anymore.  If you want to make an impression, you have to do something different.  SendOutCards is old-school: real paper greeting cards that are delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.  You create your own personalized custom greeting cards that you can send to one person or 1,000 in a few mouse clicks.  You can even include gifts!  SendOutCards is an easy to use automated marketing system that allows you to personalize each card so that you are reaching your “clients in a high touch way.”

I use SendOutCards to appreciate my Custom Furniture clients.  I like it so much, I added it as another income stream.  I’d be happy to show you how the system works!

ContactSync lets you sync your Google contacts with your smart phone.  I could not find a website for this specific app but a Google search for ContactSync did result in several possible matches.  I have an Android phone and my Google contacts are automatically synced.

AppointmentCore for InfusionSoft integrates with GoToMeeting, Google calendar and Free Conference Calling so you don’t have to manually update your calendar.

Mobit takes text messaging to the next level.  We all know that email marketing just doesn’t work anymore.  Mobit helps you connect with your clients with images, videos and responsive websites all via their smartphone.  A word of caution, be sure you have your clients’ permission before you text your marketing messages!

I am sure you’ll find at least one useful app or website from this list of 7 shared by AmericanExpress OPEN and MSNBC. Be sure to leave a comment below with YOUR favorite app or website.

Karen Palmer on Being the Mom of Your Dreams | WAHM Interview

Karen Palmer and Her Family

Karen Palmer and Her Family

Karen Palmer, author of License to Play and co-author of License to Dream, helps moms rediscover their dreams by equipping them with the skills they need to build a network marketing business that will give them freedom with both their time and their money. Karen believes that every person on this planet was created for a purpose. She helps women, especially moms, find their purpose and give them hope that they can fulfill it.

License to Play

Favorite Color?

Fast food or home cooked meal?
Restaurant—but not fast food. No clean up!

What is the one thing that annoys you the most?
Not following through. And people who don’t take responsibility for their actions.

What is the first thing you do when you wake up?
Exercise, read my Bible. And check e-mail & FB—trying to break that habit. 😉

Where would you go if you were invisible?

What’s your motto?
You can do it. 😉

Why did you choose to start your business – do what you do?
After being in my network marketing business for a little while, I realized that it was not only helping me earn money, but helping me recapture dreams I had forgotten or thought were impossible. Especially after writing License to Play & beginning License to Dream with Judy O’Higgins & Kristi Lee, I really felt like I needed to specifically focus on helping moms.

Who inspires you?
People who are making a difference in the world.

What makes you different from other people in your industry?
As a team, Judy, Kristi & I are different because we offer three different personalities, ages, styles, etc. But with a passion to help women succeed.

What is the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
Be a mom. And move across the country from my family.

What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you?
I have no idea.

What is your biggest challenge or obstacle?
Time. And doubt. Worry that I’m not doing enough or not doing the right thing.

What will it take to overcome your biggest challenge or obstacle?
Faith and a big why.

What are some of your favorite books?
That question is too hard. 😉

Define your style?
I’m a jeans and t-shirt gal, but I have a friend who has taught me how to glam my casual style up a bit. My personality is very driven, though. I don’t like to just sit around (unless I’ve got a good book to read). I like having a very clean house. I like to do things right. A bit of a perfectionist.

Tell me about your typical day.
Wake up. Exercise. Eat breakfast & read my Bible. Get the kids upstairs for school. Lunch. Work in the afternoons. Sometimes at home, sometimes at the office. Evenings, I try not to work too much, but often work on writing my dissertation or meet with my team in the evenings.
How do you juggle work and family? Everything goes together. It’s tough, but if you start with who you are and what God wants you to do, the rest falls into place.

Three tips you would like to give to people who are thinking about starting a business in your industry?

    1. Just do it.
    2. Make sure you choose a company that you’ll love for the long haul—not just the first thing that comes along. Do your research. I’ve run into too many women who spent a ton of money and then felt stuck with the business they chose.
    3. Stick with it. Don’t jump ship.

What’s the best way to market your particular business?
Word of mouth. Meet other people. Join groups. Lifestyle.

How have you grown as a person since starting your company?
I’ve rediscovered who I am—at least in part. When I had kids, I had a really hard time figuring out what to do with myself. I wanted to stay home with them, but my identity was rooted in the academic world—achieving goals and feeling like I’d accomplished something. Then, just as I was getting used to being a mom and relaxing in that role, I had to go back to work again. Network marketing helped me to look outside the boxes I was putting myself in to see who I actually am and start thinking bigger—the current circumstance doesn’t have to be the same for always.

License to Play by Karen Palmer

License to Play by Karen Palmer

If you could travel back in time and speak to your 18 year old self, what would you say?
Start your own business. NOW. And I’d probably have some good ideas of where to start.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
On a ranch with my kids enjoying life.

For whom are you thankful? Who do you appreciate?
I really appreciate my hubby and kids. They have always supported me—and not just that, they’ve helped me to grow myself and my business. When I feel like giving up, they won’t let me! I also appreciate my upline mentors, like Judy, and my team members. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

What else would you like to add?
A lesson that I’m having to learn over again…don’t compare yourself to anyone else. The picture we get on Facebook about people is just the part of their lives they let show. Don’t judge yourself by the glamorized images on social media. Just do the best you can and be proud of your accomplishments. Focus on your goals.
